Kelly Slater has advanced to the third round of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.

Eleven-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater has successfully negotiated a tricky second-round heat to stay in contention for the Rip Curl Pro title at Bells Beach.

The 44-year-old Slater needed to draw on all of his experience to see off the challenge of wildcard Timothee Bisso from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.

Bisso had the highest-scoring wave of the heat, but Slater's consistency saw him advance, 12.90 points to 10.50.
