Australian surfer Mick Fanning has announced he will skip some events as he takes a "personal year".

Three-time world champion Mick Fanning has announced he will only compete part-time in this year's World Surf League.

Fanning says he will contest the first two events in Australia - at Snapper Rocks in Queensland and Bells Beach in Victoria - before skipping some others throughout the season as he takes a "personal year".

He has, however, confirmed he will return to compete at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa where he was attacked by a large shark during competition last July.
